What to expect in the knockout stages

England V Australia

Eddie Jones and Michael Cheika’s old Randwick rivalry is reignited. The Red Rose will face the Wallabies in the first quarter-finals of the 2019 Rugby World Cup on Saturday, October 19, at the Oita Stadium.

England topped pool C while Australia finished runners-up in pool D to set up the epic clash.

The two teams share plenty of history that suggests we should brace for a nail-biter. Since England’s embarrassing display in 2015, they’ve reigned supreme and trumped Australia in six from six encounters. More pertinently, they’ve beaten their rivals in two quarter-finals.
The Wallabies are yet to produce a convincing display in the World Cup as expected and labored hard to beat a battling Georgia in their last match. Michael Cheika has played down discussions of his team being underdogs.

New Zealand V Ireland

Best odds are at Betfair : New Zealand 1/6, Draw 25, Ireland 9/2.

All Blacks will play Ireland in the second quarter-finals of the Rugby World Cup 2019 on the same day at the Tokyo stadium.

New Zealand finished top of pool B while Ireland finished runners-up in pool A to set up the meeting. Ireland has lost all six quarter-final matches they’ve played, while their opponents have only lost once in eight quarter-final appearances. However, Ireland is one of only a few teams that has managed to beat the reigning double world champions, beating them twice in their last three tests.

The star-studded and formidable All Blacks are the tournament favorites. Given the team’s incredible form, falling to Ireland is considered very unlikely but, the Irish forwards will surely give New Zealand some torrid time.

Wales V France

Best odds are at William Hill : Wales 4/11, Draw 25, France5/2.

Wales will face France in the third quarter-final of Rugby World Cup 2019 on Sunday, October 20, at the Oita Stadium.

Wales finished top of pool D while Les Bleus were runners-up in pool C. Their last meeting in a World Cup was in the semi-finals eight years ago, where France won 9-8. Six wins from eight quarter-finals are favorable while compared to one win from four for the Welsh side. The Six Nations Champions and battle-hardened Wales will be looking to give Warren Gatland a perfect send-off. Their spirits will be high boosted by the group stage wins against Australia and Fiji, which provides them with a competitive edge.

Les Bleus will have to make it come together if they want to beat Gatland’s men. The young French side has only put up a convincing display in the first half of their match against a rusty Argentine side, and we’re lucky to hold on in the second period. Their style of play will cost the opponents’ mean defense some problems.

Japan V South Africa

The best odds are at Paddy-Power: Japan 4, Draw 45, South Africa 1/6.

Hosts Japan will play South Africa in the last quarter-final match of the Rugby World Cup 2019 at the Tokyo Stadium on Sunday, October 20.
Japan finished top of pool A while South Africa finished runners-up in pool B.

The teams have met once in the World Cup, during 2015’s group stages, when Japan produced one of the biggest upsets when they beat South Africa 34-32 in Brighton. The hosts have been the story of the tournament and will be looking to repeat the feat on Sunday, especially after putting up scintillating performances in the group stages to beat big boys Scotland and Ireland. Will their fairy tale continue?

The Springboks are favorites to win the tournament. They will be looking to exert their revenge against the Japanese minnows and display their power with the arrogance they have displayed in the group stage wins over Italy, Namibia, and Canada. The home team will bring the battle to the formidable Springboks and with the fans’ support, they might conjure some magic.
