What are they Playing for?
The total prize pool at the 2019 League of Legends World Championship is $2,225,000 USD. This gets carved up between the 24 teams on a decreasing percentage basis. The winning team will take a 37.5% share of the total prize pool which equals a cool $834,375 USD.
Who Are the Teams to Watch?
With the tournament in full swing, there have already been a fair few teams that have slain all before them, whilst some have gotten off to a very poor start.
If we are going on their performances leading into the World’s then all eyes are on European powerhouse G2 Esports. Keep a watch on group A to see how they stack up against Griffin, Cloud9 and another team yet to be decided upon. Many pundits are saying that the tournament is theirs to lose, but that’s some intense pressure to live with.
It would be silly of us to write off the three-time World champions SK Telecom T1 who are led by the steady hands of Faker and Invictus Gaming. They are back to defend the title and will surely fight all the way through to retain the trophy. Watch Group C closely to see how they fare against Fnatic and Royal Never Give Up plus one other team yet to be decided.
It’s worth noting that Royal Never Give Up from China is expected to perform well so that clash at the group stage will be a must-watch fixture early in the finals.
Also, it’s worth pointing out that both Fnatic and Cloud 9 are somewhat regular performers at the Worlds. Therefore, Groups A and C are certainly where some tournament upsets could occur and unfold before our very eyes. Despite either team failing to win regional titles this year, they both progressed well into the knockout stages at last year’s event so they can’t be dismissed easily.
