About the Aussies
The Aussies head to Japan on the back of a convincing 34-15 win over Samoa. The 2015 runners-up have been struggling with consistency to match the heights of their last World Cup campaign. Pressure has been mounting on head coach Michael Cheika after a poor display in the defeat from South Africa at the start of the 2019 Rugby Championship, and a dismal European Tour at the end of last year that saw them win only once, against Italy, in four matches.
Nonetheless, a ruthless 47-26 win over 14-man New Zealand and a battling victory over Argentina have given some signs of encouragement. The captain and openside flanker Michael Hooper are their key players and expected to lead from the front. With the marquee David Pocock back from injury and Lukhan Salakaia-Lotto on the blindside, Australia’s fans will be full of hopes of their team repeating their 2015 performance but, their consistency will be essential.
About the Welsh
The Ospreys maintained impressive form to going unbeaten through the 2018 autumn internationals and an incredible Six Nations Victory, completing their first Grand Slam in seven years. The team then went top in the world rankings after beating England 13-6 in an impressive display in Cardiff. But back to back losses to Ireland and the recent sacking of attacking coach Rob Howley for betting offences have not helped in the team’s preparations.
The focus will now be on talisman Dan Biggar, and captain Alun Wyn Jones both capped 73 times and 128 times respectively. The veteran duo is expected to shoulder more responsibility in the tournament, especially with fly-half Gareth Anscombe ruled out of the tournament with an injury. They will be out to silence critics who believe Wales cannot mount a serious trophy challenge.
