National Television Awards 2020 Latest Odds and Favourites

The National Television Awards airs January 28 on ITV with all the nominees already announced. All National Television Awards are decided by a public vote through post, phone, and the official NTA website.

They are then verified by an independent agency, so you can rest assured that all results are as announced. In this preview we take a look at some of the latest odds and favourites for this year’s National Television Awards.

Best Drama

The ‘Best Drama’ award is among the more prestigious and always attract a series of impressive nominees. Peaky Blinders won the category last year and they are also the frontrunners this year.

Last year, the show’s cast was was unable to attend the event, but they might get another chance this year. Currently priced 11/10 at Betfair, Peaky Blinders is followed by a strong field of nominees that all share an outside chance of upsetting the favourite.

Best New Drama

Another prominent awards that recognises one of the up and coming shows on British TV. BBC drama Bodyguard won it last year, but as the name indicates, shows can only be nominated once for this award.

The HBO mega-success Chernobyl is the undisputed favourite at 2/7 with Betfred, while other nominees include the historical drama Gentleman Jack and the South Korean A Confession. These are all strong candidates but it’s difficult to see anyone but Craig Mazin’s Chernobyl running away with this one.

Best Comedy

The race for the Best Comedy award is expected to be one of the closest as this year’s NTA. Fleabag, Afterlife and Mrs Brown Boys are all priced around 3/1, while Derry Girl is a close fourth at 5/1 with Betfair.

The British teen comedy Sex Education has also been nominated for the award, but currently stands with shallow chances of winning (24/1 at Betfred). This is an exciting award to follow as the evening unfolds, as most of the other awards are dominated by a clear favourite. Here, at least four shows stand a good chance of winning.

About the National Television Awards

The National Television Awards are the UK’s biggest television awards ceremony that’s voted for by the public.

The show started back in 1995 and has grown to become one of the biggest TV events of the year. Over the years, a host of big names in the world of TV have been rewarded, with the ceremony honouring whole shows, as well as actors, presenters and talent show judges.

The biggest award of the night is the Special Recognition award, which honours an individual who’s made an outstanding contribution to British TV throughout their career. This particular award is the only one that’s not voted for by the public.

What You Can Bet On

When it comes to betting on the National Television Awards, you’re betting on which show or individual wins a particular category. The exact line-up of categories can vary from year to year, though there are some that are always included.

To give you an idea of what you can bet on, here’s the full list of categories from this year’s ceremony:

  • Quiz Show
  • New Drama
  • Talent Show
  • Drama
  • TV Presenter
  • Factual Entertainment
  • Drama Performance
  • The Bruce Forsyth Entertainment Award
  • Serial Drama
  • Serial Drama Performance
  • Comedy
  • Newcomer
  • Daytime
  • TV Judge
  • Special Recognition

The 2020 ceremony is going to be held on Tuesday 28 January. It should include most, if not all, of the categories listed above.

For each category, a long list of nominees is published in September. This list can include anything from half a dozen to several dozen names and is put together by the National Television Awards. The public vote on this, with a shortlist of nominees, revealed in January. Following the reveal, there’s a second round of public voting to determine the winner of each category. There are up to five nominees in each category. Voting for the winners closes at noon on the day of the ceremony.

PromoVeritas, a third-party adjudicator verifies all the votes and confirms the results for each category. The winners are publicly revealed live during the ceremony, one category at a time.

How Is Betting On National Television Awards Different From Betting On Sports?

SmartphoneGambler mascot

The way the nomination system for the National Television Awards works, it’s basically a popularity contest. However, there’s more to it as the nominees are determined not only by their popularity but also by how well they’ve been received. All of the nominees are both popular and critically successful, to some degree. A TV show that’s been popular but hasn’t been well appreciated by the public at all will likely not get a nomination. So in short, the ceremony’s a chance for people to vote on popular shows of quality.

With sports betting, you’re betting on which team or individual contender goes on to win. The outcome of a sporting event or race is determined by the competitors’ own capabilities and, for team sports, how well they work together in a team.

With award ceremonies such as the National Television Awards, betting is different is that it’s not necessarily about the best – it’s about guessing which of the nominees gets the most votes from the public.

Understanding National Television Awards Betting Odds

When it comes to betting on the National Television Awards, you’ll want to take into the account the odds for any nominee you’re betting on. When determining the odds, bookies take a lot of factors into consideration:

  • For show categories, bookies look at how successful the show’s been, how big of an impact it’s had and whether it’s a long-running show that’s well established with a steady fan base, or whether it’s a new show.
  • For categories awarding individual people, bookies may consider the person’s public image, social media following, celebrity status, how their skills are perceived by the public and whether they’re generally seen as someone worthy of an award.

Generally speaking, the bigger a show or individual is, the better their odds will be. Of course, while bookies have their ideas about who’s going to win, there’s never a guarantee. The bookies’ favourite for a particular may fall short and a nominee with worse odds may just end up winning.

When Is The Best Time To Bet On National Television Awards?

No matter when you place your wager, whether it’s as soon as the shortlist nominees have been announced or whether it’s on the day of the ceremony, you can still win a decent pay-out. However, generally speaking, you may well find that the National Television Awards odds shorten somewhat as the ceremony draws closer.

This is because bookies have a better idea of who’s more likely to win the closer to the ceremony it is. If you place your wager right when the nominees are announced, bookies haven’t had the time to assess which nominees are more popular and have a better chance of winning.

This year’s voting on the longlist has been closed on the 25th of October. The shortlist was announced at the beginning of January 2020.

Betting Tips

1 It’s important to remember that all of the winners are determined by public vote. Therefore, when placing your wagers you should have a think about which of the nominees would be likely to earn more votes from the public. What you shouldn’t do is vote for your favourite or the team or individual you think deserves to win. Try to see who other people are backing. Find out who friends, family members and colleagues are voting for. If there’s a particular nominee who most people are favouring over the other nominees, this could be an indication of how the wider public are going to vote. Having said that, there’s never a guarantee that the nominee you back will win.

2 You might want to look at viewing figures to help you decide which nominees to bet on. While the shows that get nominated tend to do well in the ratings, many receive millions of more views than others. Since the voting’s done by the public, you may well find that a show with ten million viewers scoops an award over a show with five million viewers. If this is the case, it could well be that not enough people have seen the show with five million viewers to give it enough votes to win.

3 You might also want to take AI into account. Short for Audience Appreciation Index, AI is a measure of how well a show is received by the public. Shows are given a score out of 100, with most shows achieving a score in the 80s or higher. AI is calculated by BARB (the Broadcasters’ Audience Research Board), the same organisation that compiles TV viewing figures. A show that’s done especially well in the AI ratings may just have a better chance of winning an award than a show that hasn’t been so highly rated.

4 It’s also worth pointing out that there’s one notable category you might want to avoid betting on. This is the TV Presenter category and it’s been won by Ant and Dec at every single ceremony since 2001 when the category was introduced. Since the duo are pretty much a dead cert to win, you’re better off saving your money and spending it betting on other categories. Though that being said, it’s still a pretty safe bet to place.

5 Of course, it helps to watch lots of TV! If you’re familiar with the shows and individuals that have received nominations, you should have a pretty good idea about who’s going to win. If you don’t watch too much TV but still fancy betting on the National Television Awards, the more research you do, the better!

History Of National Television Awards And Winners

The Gong – official award

The very first edition of the National Television Awards took place in 1995. It was hosted by Eamonn Holmes and held at the Wembley Conference Centre. Then from 1996 to 2008, it was hosted by Sir Trevor McDonald and held at the Royal Albert Hall. In 2009, there was no show broadcast, as it was decided to move the show from its usual airing time of October to January. For the 2010 show onwards, the host and venue also changed: Dermot O’Leary took over hosting duties and the show was held at The 02 Arena.

Following the 2019 ceremony, the 24th one to date, O’Leary announced his resignation as host. A replacement has not yet been announced as of the time of writing. It’s assumed that for 2020 onwards, the ceremony will continue to be held at The 02 Arena. The ceremony runs from approximately two-and-a-half hours with adverts. It’s broadcast on ITV 1 and is produced by Indigo Television.

Across the ceremonies, a wide variety of popular TV shows and individuals have been honoured with awards. Many of the biggest long-running shows, such as Britain’s Got Talent, I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here, Strictly Come Dancing, Downton Abbey, Broadchurch, The Great British Bake Off, Gogglebox, Eastenders, Coronation Street and Emmerdale, to name just a few, have won awards. Lots of popular TV stars have received individual awards: some of the many recipients include Alan Carr, Ant and Dec, Mary Berry, David Walliams, Benedict Cumberbatch and Suranne Jones.

As for the big award, Special Recognition, it’s been handed out to some of the most respected and established names in British TV. The 2019 award went to David Dimbleby, best known for hosting Question Time for a quarter of a decade. Other winners include Paul O’Grady, Graham Norton, Joanna Lumley, David Tennant and Sir David Attenborough.
