As a result of the lockdown, Khabib won’t be able to leave Russia to fight Tony Ferguson on April 18th 2020. Fortunately, the UFC found another fighter for Tony Ferguson: Justin Gaethje. The fight will take place on 10th May 2020.
Tony Ferguson VS Justin Gaethje May 10th 2020
Tony Ferguson will fight after all, but it won’t be the lineup that we had all hoped for. Khabib Nurmagomedov is currently in lockdown inside Russian borders and this has led to Dana White making the tough decision to pull Khabib out and introduce a new challenger, who comes in the shape of Justin Gaethje.
Ferguson is obviously still able to fight within the US and this means the interim lightweight title will be on the line as Gaethje steps into the Octagon with Ferguson on May 10th.
Ferguson will still be somewhat annoyed, as this is now the fifth time a fight between him and Khabib has been cancelled. Past issues include injuries and illness but neither could help the latest problem in as much as the whole world is now in lockdown. Khabib has commented that this is all out of his hands and that he has continued to train in the hope that the border bans would be lifted, however, he’s out of luck and the two fighters will have to wait for another chance to square up to each other.
What do we know about Justin Gaethje?
Gaethje offers an orthodox stance and a striker fighting style, he also matches Ferguson for height and weight at 1.8 m and 70 kg respectively. At 31 years of age, he’s five years younger than Ferguson but he is losing 16 cms in reach which could prove to be a crucial detail in the fight.
Many are questioning the runup for Gaethje and if he’s had enough time to train for the fight. Ferguson, on the other hand, is in prime condition but he has been training and expecting to fight Khabib, now he has to create a winning strategy to beat Gaethje. In all fairness, the matchup on paper looks very interesting but we do need to take the circumstances of both fighters into consideration, especially Gaethje. Gaethje has specifically said that he does not do well with short-notice fights.
Justin was earmarked to be the next opponent of Conor McGregor in the summer at the International Fight Week card due on the 11th of July.
The fact that Gaethje was linked up for a summer fight means that losing this new matchup against Ferguson could mean losing out on the McGregor fight as well. This brings a new dimension for Gaethje and accepting this fight must have been a tough decision to make. In all fairness though, a lot of people are touted to fight McGregor and so maybe Gaethje has just decided to step up and get some action in now. If he wins then it gives him a huge momentum swing and that could bring in a huge payday for the next fight, McGregor or whoever.
What can we expect from the fight?
The outcome of the match will likely come down to the shape of Gaethje and how well he can cope without having the full fight camp training. If he’s kept himself in shape then this could be a fight that does not go the full distance, it’s likely that both fighters will want some fun and this could make for a really entertaining outcome with one stopping the other before the final bell. Gaethje is known to always come out and attack in one direction while Ferguson has the ability to dance around with his acrobatic style. Both fighters are also known to have insanely high pain thresholds, so this could really end up either way.
Odds Tips on Tony vs Justin
The sensible option would be to back Tony Ferguson as he has the advantage of a full training camp and he’ll be in the right frame of mind. But with everything else going in the world, you could say that both fighters are training in uncharted territories. One thing is for sure though, it’ll be a cracker of a fight no matter who wins and takes the interim lightweight title.
