Volleyball betting overview

Volleyball is quite a unique sport in a few different ways. Once thought of as something fun to do on the beach under the sun, it now dominates the competitive side of sport and holds a prominent position at the Olympics. As with any sport that becomes successful, betting on volleyball is also growing in popularity.

In its competitive form, volleyball is played on a relatively large court. Each volleyball team has six players, and the height of the net in between them is determined based on their gender.

The idea is to try and hit the ball over the net so that the other team has to fault. Each team is only allowed to touch the ball three times while it is on their side of the court, and it has to be touched by three separate individuals.

Volleyball Faults

Faults are incredibly common in volleyball, and there are a few different ways in which a team can fault. For example, if the same player hits the ball twice in a row they will receive an instant fault. The ball is however allowed to hit any part of the body.

Players can also fault by touching the net whilst the ball is in play, or by hitting the ball in a way that leads to it landing outside of the boundaries.

Winning a Volleyball Match

In order to win a volleyball match, a team simply has to hit 25 points before their opponents do. Each match usually works on a best-of-five principal, meaning that a maximum of five rounds can be played and 25 points need to be won in each. If both teams are sat at 24-24, then one of them has to score 26. There has to be a two-point margin for a team to win.

Luckily, professional volleyball is just as easy to understand as the type of volleyball that you would usually play on the beach. Learning how the sport works and tracking the skills of the players is a relatively easy task because of this.

Placing Volleyball Bets

In the United Kingdom, most major bookkeepers give you the option to bet on volleyball online. You can usually bet on both professional volleyball and amateur leagues, depending on the options that are offered by your bookmaker.

We would advise that you start with Money Line betting, simply because of how easy it is to understand. Remember, you are more likely to win when you are betting on lower odds.

You won’t make much money doing this, but it should give you some of the skills that you need to make more informed decisions in the future. Who knows? You might even decide to bet on the underdog and come out of it with a nice sum of money.

One of our favourite things about betting on volleyball matches is the fact that volleyball matches take place throughout the year. You don’t have to wait for the season to start, and you can easily track your favourite teams and how well they are performing throughout the year. Remember, volleyball has grown in popularity over the last decade, which is why bookmakers are now offering a variety of different bets for you to choose from.

Before you start placing your bets, you should read through the “Betting on Volleyball Strategies” that are covered in our next section.

Understanding Volleyball Betting markets

When you start looking into different volleyball bets, you will notice that most bookmakers offer three different types and live bet volleyball options. These include:

Money Line Betting

Money line betting is something that can be found across a variety of different sports, including baseball, handball and a number of different fighting events. Put simply, Money Line betting refers to betting on the team that you think will win the match.

There are a number of different techniques that you can use to improve your chances when placing a Money Line bet, and some of them can be found in our “Betting on Volleyball Strategies” section.

Handicap Betting

Handicap bets are a little bit harder to understand initially, and they are generally only offered when you can see that one team is much more likely to win than the other. When a bookmaker can see this happening, they will usually try to level the playing field by offering a handicap that covers the exact number of sets that are required to win.

Totals Betting

Totals betting is the type of betting that requires more skill, and we would highly recommend that you research both of the teams that are playing before you place a Totals bet. When you place a Totals bet, you have to guess whether the number of sets that will be played will be above or below a number that is set by the bookmaker.

Naturally, this means that you won’t be betting on who the winner of the volleyball match will be, but it also means that you need to be able to accurately predict how quickly the game will conclude. This can be quite difficult.

Strategies on Volleyball Betting

When you are betting on sporting events, there are plenty of different strategies that you can take into consideration and use to try and stay ahead of the bookmakers and your fellow punters. Luckily, volleyball betting is still much smaller than other betting fields, and that alone can be enough to give you an advantage if you are willing to put some time into researching your chosen area.

If you are new to Volleyball betting and would like to give it a try, we suggest you take a look at the bonus bets available in UK.

Some of our favourite volleyball betting strategies to use include:

1.     Research

It goes without saying that research and betting on sporting events come hand in hand.

We would highly recommend that you research the teams that you are betting on so that you can get an idea of their skills and weaknesses, as that will help you to decide whether or not you are placing the right bet.

Try to remember that going with the majority isn’t always the best option when placing bets, as a lot of your fellow punters will simply be betting on their favourite teams and hoping for an outcome. If you start looking at statistics, you should have an advantage over them.

2.     Social Media

When you are doing your research, we would recommend that you see how each of the players are performing on social media. Their social media accounts will probably give you an idea of whether or not any of them are currently suffering from injuries, as a lot of athletes like to share their recovery to educate their audience.

If just one person on a volleyball team is suffering, then the whole team can be affected by that and it can sway the outcome of the entire game.

On social media, you should also be able to see how well-bonded the team is. If there are any underlying negative emotions between players, they could quite easily show themselves on the court.

3.     The Volleyball Schedule

Before you start placing your bets, you will have to decide which volleyball events you would like to bet on. Naturally, volleyball takes place throughout the year, but there will always be some events that are more prestigious than others.

The biggest priority on the volleyball calendar would have to be the events that are held at the Olympics. Naturally, athletes focus their attention on these storied games as soon as they know that they are on the horizon. Next in line would have to be World Cup Volleyball, as that acts as the qualifier for the Olympics and is equally as important.

If you want to bet on big events, then we would recommend starting with those. If you are happy to start betting elsewhere, then you should take a look at Grand Prix Volleyball, World League Volleyball and the abundance of international leagues that can be found around the world.

4.     The Team Dynamic

As we have mentioned briefly, any negative emotions that can be found among teammates will reveal themselves on the court, so you should avoid betting on a team if you know that these are present.

Naturally, a volleyball team has to work as a unit. They have to be able to read what everyone else on the team is going to do, and they have to be able to react to their actions.

We would recommend looking at training schedules and trying to find out what sort of training your chosen team has been doing.

5.     Double Your Money

If you feel confident, then you should also take a look to see whether or not any betting accumulators are available for your chosen event. This should allow you to bet on a range of different volleyball matches, many of which will be part of the same league. For example, you could bet on the winners of three different games.

Try to remember that accumulators are risky, and you will lose your money if just one of your chosen teams loses. But, if you bet on predictable winners, then you can expect to gain more money than you would by betting on just a single predictable winner.

6.     Placing Live Bets

In the world of sport, whether or not you should place live bets is often debated. We would recommend that you give it a try to see whether or not it is for you, but it can be incredibly time-consuming. To bet on a live event, you will have to be paying close attention to it. This can also limit the number of events that you can bet on, as well as where in the world they are.

Naturally, when you go to place a live bet you have an immediate advantage because you can see how well or how poorly a team is playing. This is especially true if it turns out that one of the players on the court is playing with an injury, and it can be used to accurately predict outcomes.

You should always try to remember that the world of volleyball doesn’t give athletes time to recover. This means that athletes are incredibly unlikely to get through the year without an injury of one kind or another and live betting can help you to see these injuries and place your bets based on them.

Try to remember that volleyball matches can also be turned around quite quickly. Just because one team wins the first set does not mean that they will win the match. Try to really look at how each member of each team is playing and analyse what is happening on the court before you move to place your bet. Don’t follow to watch the games you bet on, to have a better understanding of the game but also the teams and players, you can easily find a site offering free sports streaming.

Conclusion

Volleyball is a fascinating sport, and it comes as no surprise to us that it is growing around the world. Bookmakers understand this, and they are now offering bets throughout the year that cover everything from the Olympics to small domestic leagues.

If you follow our advice, then we are certain that you will be able to win some money by betting on volleyball. Make sure that you research the teams, keep your eye on the schedule and try to work out whether or not anyone is playing with an injury.

It’s incredibly easy to get emotional if you are betting on live events, and this can lead to poor judgement. If you know that you will struggle to analyse what is happening on the court, then we would recommend that you place your bets before the match starts. You can always place another bet while the game is in play.
